The Village C.A.R.E.S. Program

The Village at Canadore is partnering with local organizations to help residents in North Bay, Nipissing, and Parry Sound who are facing social isolation as a result of COVID-19. Over nine weeks, placement students from Social Service Worker and Mental Health and Addictions Programs, called CARES Agents, will contact residents in long-term care homes, assisted living, and other marginalized people to provide reassurance calls.

C.A.R.E.S stands for:

C – Compassion Calls
A – Assistance
R - Respect
E – Exchange
S - Support

What are reassurance or wellness calls?

Reassurance calls or wellness calls are designed to provide social contact and a check-in for isolated seniors and adults with disabilities who live independently or in care homes. The call will be centered on developing a social or recreational connection between the student and the client, whereby students and clients discuss topics of interest. Clients will receive a phone call on a regular basis, as determined by the client and the student. Research shows that regular contact decreases the risks and anxiety associated with being isolated.

You can self-refer or refer a family member who would benefit from these calls by calling Micheline McWhirter at 705.474.7600 ext. 7989 or emailing Kelsey Lecappelain at kelsey.lecappelain@canadorecollege.ca.
